Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is essentially a heist and hijack film rolled into one and sprinkled with some other genres that definitely make it a compelling watch.
I came across this movie from an Instagram reel (which is like a norm these days). But the main reason I watched was Yami Gautam, who was so good and underrated in ‘A Thursday’.
Let’s get to the movie.
The movie starts in the Middle Eastern city of ‘Al-barkat’. And throughout, the story shifts between the past and the present.
The past:
Neha (Yami) is a flight attendant. On one of her aerial journeys, she meets Ankit (Sunny Kaushal), a failed diamond insurer. Now, from their very first interaction, I did not get a good vibe from the dude. At all.
And their entire relationship, from the whole stalking to them becoming pregnant, it did not seem real. I mean, I wasn’t expecting Karan Johar romance but a little something would have helped. But I guess that is just a part of the plot.
Neha soon finds out that Ankit got involved in a case of stolen diamonds and now owes a big chunk of money to a thug, which he doesn’t have. At this point, it is also revealed that she is the daughter of a guy who handles the underworld’s money and was shot in front of her eyes.
The thugs beat up Ankit in a mall parking lot, and in an effort to save her fiance, Neha suffers a kick to her stomach and loses the baby. Desperate to get out of this mess, she and Ankit agree to pull off a diamond heist to repay the debt.
The present:
The couple targets a sleazeball politician who is stowing away a cache of diamonds to India. But, as the flight takes off, it gets hijacked by terrorists.
The hijackers herd the 150 passengers to one section of the plane and order the flight to be diverted to Kullu, Himachal.
Ankit, desperate to steal, attempts several times (and supremely stupidly) to slip away and look for the diamonds in the courier’s business class seat. I mean, dude there are terrorists with literal guns to your head. The fuck?!
Not only does he get beat up several times but he also pushes Neha to go search for it. Asshole. However, despite the kicks to his body, he manages to find the diamonds.
Eventually, the flight marshall sets himself free. As the flight lands in Kullu, he overpowers and kills the terrorists.
Now, here is when the movie becomes even more interesting.
Before the terrorists died, they strapped a bomb to Ankit’s chest. Which turns out to be a fake. As the bomb squad cuts the wire, comedic relief comes in the form of an old song playing from the bomb phone and Ankit sitting there absolutely dumbstruck with his busted nose. I loved it.
In addition to the fake bomb, the bodies of the terrorists shot down by the flight marshall are nowhere to be found.
The RAW agent on the scene Parvez (Sharad Kelkar) has a rising suspicion about something not being right. So, he holds in all the passengers and begins questioning them.
Meanwhile, Ankit slips the diamonds to the politician’s assistant, but it turns out they are fake. He loses his cool in the bathroom when Neha tries to support him and bangs her head against the mirror.
This is where he reveals that Neha was nothing but a pawn in his game to pay back the thug. He had purposely followed, stalked and targeted her to carry out his plan of stealing the diamonds.
As the RAW agent questions every passenger, the remainder of the story starts coming to light.
Apparently, the hijack wasn’t a hijack at all. The brave marshall wasn’t a marshall at all, and is now missing. The real one had been knocked out with drugs during the entirety of the flight.
So, what exactly was it?
The past:
Neha wakes up in the hospital to find out that her baby didn’t survive the brutal kick to her stomach.
She goes on to find out through a recorded call that Ankit has been playing her from the start. She follows him from the hospital to a bar where she sees him being chummy with the 2 guys who attacked them and laughing crudely about how they took care of the baby problem for him.
Icing on the cake, she also catches him cheating on her.
Curses on Ankit, though. Banging another woman while your fiance was in the hospital? Dude had no shame.
As Neha returns to the hospital, she gives one last, heartfelt, body-shaking cry to the whole scenario and then devotes her entire anger to vengeance.
She agrees to the mid-air diamond heist with Ankit but makes a plan of her own by conspiring with her cousin Sudhanshu (Indraneil Sengupta, who deadass looks like Jeff Goldblum).
The plan is to not only take the diamonds but to make Ankit take the fall for it along with getting some solid digs at his face, which he is a little too proud of.
The present:
Agent Parvez begins to figure out this entire plot. He questions Neha but has no evidence.
In an anonymous phone call, Neha tips the politician that his assistant and Ankit had planned to screw him over and steal the diamonds, which he was stowing away. To save his ass, the politician orders Agent Parvez to let the passengers go.
Meanwhile, Ankit corners Neha, accusing her of double-crossing him. Her acting in this scene as the aloof girlfriend had me floored. The way she innocently says ‘It still hurts where you hit me. I am very upset with you.’ like she didn’t just get his ass beat.
Ankit gets dragged away by the politician’s goons. Neha joins the other passengers as they leave. The scene cuts to all of the people who helped her in her plan.
As the movie closes, she is seen on a flight.
Only this time, she isn’t serving other passengers.
This time, she is cushioned comfortably in a business class seat and being served a drink, highlighting how her status has elevated after a 120 crore diamond heist.
The movie was really good. And Yami Gautam is honestly supremely underrated.
If you would like to watch this movie, it is available to stream on Netflix.
